Eagle Trip

Participants Wanted

We are going to try something new this year, adult educational trips.  The first one I’m scheduling is to the National Eagle Center in Wabasha MN.  I’m still in the planning stage, but I envision taking a 15 passenger van, traveling to the eagle center for a program, and returning along the Mississippi River in a hopscotch of nature center stops along the way there and back.  It should be a nice relaxing trip with educational opportunities abounding.

The trip will leave Northwood at 8 a.m. on February 24th and return late afternoon.  The cost of the trip is $15 which covers the admission to the eagle center and transportation.  Lunch will be at your expense.  Trip is open to adults of any age.

Contact me at this office if you would like to sign up for the trip.  Advanced sign up is necessary.  641-390-0878.  Deadline for sign up will be February 17th.  Participation is limited to 15 people.

Mountain Lions

Another deer hunting season has come and gone and again, nobody locally has shot any Mountain lions.

Seems like we have had a long spell between documented cases of mountain lions in Iowa.  The December kill by Cedar Rapids was the first in 5 years.

There was a bit of speculation that some tracks seen in North Iowa may have been mountain lion.  So, as a review here is a look at the track comparison of mountain lion and large dogs.

The Mountain Lion will have three “lobes” at the bottom of the foot pad (indicated by “C” in the picture), and typically no claws showing up.  A dog track (shown as an actual track in the dirt) can typically have an X drawn across the track  without hitting the toes or pad.
